R7000 Channels?

Hi I have the NETGEAR R7000 and for the 2.4GHz and 5GHz the channels are set to auto. Is it true that if you have it on the a higher channel say 48 instead of 36 on the 5GHz and 13 instead of 1 on the 2.4GHz channel you get better speeds or range? I downloaded inSSIDer and when I changed my channels to the higgest I have got a better singal.
